Competencies for subject and discipline
Subject and Discipline are two words with a key difference, Subject is defines to a branch of knowledge studied but Discipline refers to a branch of academic study.
Difference between Subject and Discipline:
- Subject aim on social reform and reconstruction, while disciplines refers to the development of intellectual capacity of learners.
- Content or subjects formed by simple ideas and information. which includes practical knowledge, technical knowledge as well as local community knowledge, while Content of disciplines related to the discipline and inter disciplines. its based on complex theories.
- Subject concerns about the social, political and economical need of the individuals as well as of the society. while, Disciplines concern about learning the content of discipline or behaviour. it is focused on dept-knowledge of disciplines.
- Competencies skill in subject required by the individual to need to live in society like, Communication, creativity, digital literacy etc. while competencies of disciplines are understanding and application of the discipline like self-awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making etc.
- Scope of the subjects are flexible. aims of a subject change as the aims of society change. while, disciplines refers to static but sometimes it is dynamic. it is not widely depends on the need of society. because what society will need it always demands good behaviour and disciplines.
- Outcome result of subjects will be the formation of best and better citizens involves basic skills. while, Outcome of disciplines will make a good personality.
- Nature of the subject is based on the interests, attitude and feelings of learners. while, nature of discipline is universally. less scope for change in discipline knowledge.
- Subjects are dynamic while Disciplines is static.
- Subject is limited to schools or educational institutions. while, Discipline is universal.
Describe Mastery Over the subject:
Mastery Learning is the transformation education to achieve at least 80-90% knowledge in that subject. Mastery learning is refers to a shift in responsibilities.
Mastery over the subject defines to the depth knowledge over that subject. which can be deliver successfully to their learners. mastery over the subject make the person more reliable and kind person for their learners as well as their society.
Of course nothing is ever simple in education. teacher weather are subject specialist or generalist, need a wide range of knowledge and skills to assist their learners. including the relationship with their students, depth knowledge in that subject. if teachers are fail in these properties then it is likely to be said that the learning in the classroom will not be successful.
" A teacher have done mastery over the subject is also called professional teacher."
If a teacher mastery over the subject then they will able to interact with all students positively. that teacher will provide the most meaningful experiences, like-
- Interacting with learners
- Good at lesson plan design
- To introduce of that subject at ground level.
- able to implement various teaching strategies
- Effective communication in the subject
- Learners get positive motivation
- Effective Gesture and Posture (Body language)
- Good sense of humor
- Understanding and respective towards their learners.
- Formation of team in the classroom
- Exposure of technical skills ( if they have done in technical)
Communicating the subject:
Communication is simply the transmitting of the information among their learners. every communication needs sender, medium and receiver.
A Professional teacher will make effective communication among the students on the subject's topic and they know how to go along with the subject topic. neither teacher will divert from the topic if they have professional nor make learners to be diverted from the topic. because they knows the solution of problems.
communicating the subject topics will make to learners interested and stress free in their classroom by which the level of honesty in learners will increase. how teacher will behave in the classroom, learners will get impacted by the teacher. that is why it is said that " Teacher is an agent of change".
Subject Specific terms and their uses:
You are teaching a subject, it is not important. you feel uses of this sentence awkward....right?
But yes it is very true that you are teaching a subject, it is not important. But how you are teaching the subject it is important. every subjects contains their own specific terms and vocabularies. which make a sense in that subject. so if a teacher will use irrelevant or inappropriate word in a subject means students will not able to understand the value of that subject.
e.g.
If you are teaching Physics then there you will get the word Printer called in specific term as a Electronic device. But, if you are teaching History, Geography or English then you will get another specific term for that device is Machine.
Specific word "Puberty" used in Child development but in the science specific word "Youthfulness or Youth" used for the same meaning.
Project or activities in the subject:
A project based learning includes multistep activities undertaken by individuals or group. Project based learning is an instructional methodology to achieve their task by applying their knowledge and skills through an engaging in activity.
Further we can categorise to Project Based learning in Various categories given following-

- Exposure Based Learning
- Creative Learning
- Progressive Learning
- Applied Learning
- Assessment Learning
- Model Based Learning
These above learning can be done through the various process like-
